Why High School Sports?
The purpose of a high school sports program is not to provide a future or scholarship in college sports, develop athletes to produce national championships, to provide candidates for professional sports, or to prepare a gifted few for Olympic competition. All these high levels of play are tremendous accomplishments for a few; however, they are not our goal at the high school level. The emphasis on high school athletics should be to prepare the young people of today with the necessary skills that will allow them to become future productive citizens of tomorrow. High school sports should be a positive experience for everyone with priorities placed on developing values rather than becoming college or professional athletes. Athletes should be honored to play for their high school and represent their friends, family and community with pride and respect. Communication with Coaches The Canyon Softball coaching staff welcomes parent communication. However, the staff strongly encourages athletes to communicate with their coaches directly. Softball is a class at Canyon, and athlete communication with coaches should be similar to that of students and their teachers. Most issues can be addressed and resolved directly between the athlete and the coach. Parents, please keep in mind that coaches will not discuss playing time, team selection (Varsity, JV or Frosh) or other student athletes. Please do not put your athlete's coach in the position to have to remind you of this. Before, during and after games is never a productive time to talk to coaches about your athlete. Please allow them to focus on the task at hand and schedule a time to discuss the matter privately. Sincerely, The Canyon Softball coaching staff |
